After-hours cover is sold three ways in Australia: a surcharge added to your daytime plan, a separate 24/7 plan, or a flat-rate AI line. Choose on who is actually awake and where they sit, because the overnight call is often answered offshore and billed at a higher rate than the same call at 2pm.
AiDial publishes this comparison and AiDial is one of the options in it. Providers were included because they publish enough about after-hours cover to be checked, and rows are ordered by entry price, not by preference. Every figure below comes from the provider’s own current public pages, checked on 25 August 2026.
Most after-hours answering pages compare the same four things: hours covered, message delivery, call transfer and price. None of those is the thing that goes wrong. What goes wrong is that the service you bought as “Australian” answers your 2am call from another continent, and that the call costs more than the identical call during business hours — both of which are published, and both of which sit in the terms rather than on the pricing page.
This page compares what Australian providers publish about after-hours specifically. Where a provider does not publish something, it is marked “not published” rather than guessed at.
The two facts that decide this, and where they are written down
Virtual HQ’s terms and conditions set an explicit out-of-hours surcharge. The clause reads: “Calls answered by VHQ outside of 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday or on Australian National Public holidays (in the Customer’s local time) will incur a surcharge as part of Customer’s Usage Charges of $1.00 per call for Virtual Receptionist subscriptions.” The same clause sets $0.60 per call for MessageExpress and $0.80 per minute for MyAssistant and MyDiary. That surcharge sits on top of the plan fee and any excess-call rate.
The second fact is in Virtual HQ’s FAQs, not its terms. For the 24/7 service, it states that calls “are answered in London by our London-based receptionists and in the USA by our American-based receptionists” on a follow-the-sun basis, while the Australian team covers the daytime. Activating 24/7 is free and the calls count against your normal plan allowance — but the person answering at 3am Sydney time is not in Sydney.
Neither of those is hidden and neither is unusual. Follow-the-sun is a sensible way to staff an overnight desk without paying penalty rates. It is simply not what most buyers think they are getting when the marketing page says Australian receptionists, and it is the single question worth asking before you sign anything.

What thirty overnight calls actually costs
Plan fees are not the number to compare. For an after-hours line, almost every call lands in the surcharged window, so the surcharge behaves like a second per-call rate. The table below runs the published Virtual HQ rates against AiDial’s flat plan for a business whose calls arrive outside 8am to 6pm. Virtual HQ figures exclude GST, as published. AiDial does not state GST treatment on its pricing page, so treat that column as the plan price as published.
| After-hours calls a month | Message-taking $25 + $2.50/call + $0.60 surcharge | Live reception, PAYG $33 + $3.89/call + $1.00 surcharge | Live reception 20 $80 inc 20, then $3.99 + $1.00 | AiDial Core $149 flat, 60 calls included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 calls | $56.00 | $81.90 | $90.00 | $149.00 |
| 20 calls | $87.00 | $130.80 | $100.00 | $149.00 |
| 30 calls | $118.00 | $179.70 | $149.90 | $149.00 |
| 50 calls | $180.00 | $277.50 | $249.70 | $149.00 |
| 100 calls | $335.00 | $522.00 | $499.20 | $248.60 |
Message-taking is the cheapest option below roughly forty after-hours calls a month. At $25 plus $3.10 per call once the surcharge is added, it reaches $149 at exactly forty calls, which is where the flat plan takes over. Live reception never wins on price at any volume shown — you buy it for the transfer, not the rate.
The crossover matters more than the gap. If your after-hours volume is genuinely a handful of calls a month, per-call message-taking is cheaper and this page should not talk you out of it. If it is thirty or more, or if it spikes — storm week for a plumber, flu season for a clinic, end of month for a property manager — the per-call model is where a quiet month and a bad month stop resembling each other.
Six questions that settle it
- Where is the call answered at 3am, and is that the same team as 3pm? Ask for the country, not the company’s head office. Follow-the-sun rosters are normal and disclosed, but only if you ask.
- Is there an out-of-hours surcharge, and what triggers it? Check the terms, not the pricing page. Virtual HQ’s is in clause form and applies from 6pm and on national public holidays.
- Do public holidays count as after hours? For an emergency trade or a clinic, Christmas and Easter are the highest-value nights of the year and often the most surcharged.
- Can the overnight answerer actually do anything? Taking a message is not the same as booking the job, triaging urgency or transferring to the on-call phone. Most services take messages after hours and transfer only during the day.
- What happens when two calls arrive at once at 2am? A shared human roster queues them. If the second caller is the one with the burst pipe, that queue is the product.
- What is the total for your actual volume, including surcharge, excess and GST? Run your own worst month, not the plan headline.
Why there are three prices for one 2am call
A human answering a call at 2am is expensive in a way that a daytime call is not — penalty rates, thin volume, and a roster that must be staffed whether the phone rings or not. Providers resolve that in one of three ways, and the pricing model tells you which one they picked.
- Surcharge the call. Keep the daytime price attractive and recover the cost per overnight call. Honest, published, and it means your after-hours line is the expensive one.
- Move the roster offshore. Answer Australian nights from a daytime timezone somewhere else. Cheapest to run, and the reason a 24/7 upgrade can be free.
- Remove the roster. A flat-rate AI line has no penalty rate, so 2am and 2pm cost the same, and the second simultaneous caller is not queued behind the first.
Oracle CMS is the counterexample worth naming: it states that all of its call centres are based in Australia and that the service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round including Christmas, with published entry pricing from approximately $25 a month for 15 calls. It does not publish an after-hours surcharge. For a business that wants a human, in Australia, overnight, that is the combination to check first.
Does the overnight call need someone to do something, or only to record something? Message-taking is cheap and adequate for the second. It is the wrong product for the first, at any price.

Sources and method
Every figure was read from the provider’s own current public pages on 25 August 2026. Nothing here comes from a review site, a directory or a third-party comparison. Where a provider does not publish a figure, the table says so rather than estimating it.
| Provider | Source, checked 25 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| AiDial | aidial.com.au pricing page: plan fees, included calls, extra-call rates, setup and contract terms, and the statement that AI is hosted and processed in Australia |
| Virtual HQ | virtualheadquarters.com.au call answering pricing page for plan and excess rates; the terms and conditions for the out-of-hours surcharge clauses; the FAQs page for the follow-the-sun statement about London and USA answering |
| OfficeHQ | officehq.com.au pricing page: MessageExpress, MyReceptionist, MyAssistant and MyDiary entry prices, “Plus GST” treatment, month-to-month terms and the 24/7 availability claim |
| Oracle CMS | oraclecms.com live phone answering service page: indicative plan pricing, the 24/7 all-year statement, and the statement that all call centres are based in Australia |
| Your Phones Covered | yourphonescovered.com.au pricing page: published “from” rates, per-call billing model, no-lock-in terms, and the Australian-team and offshore-team tier descriptions |
| ReceptionHQ | Excluded. The Australian site refused connection when checked on 25 August 2026. The reachable receptionhq.com site is priced in USD and describes “US-based receptionists”, so it is not comparable here and no figures from it are used |
Prices move. Anything above that is more than six months old will be removed rather than shown stale. If you find a figure that no longer matches the provider’s page, it is out of date and we would rather hear about it.
Frequently asked questions
Do Australian answering services charge more after hours?
Some do and publish it. Virtual HQ’s terms set a surcharge of $1.00 per call on Virtual Receptionist plans, $0.60 per call on MessageExpress and $0.80 per minute on MyAssistant and MyDiary, for calls answered outside 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday or on Australian national public holidays. Others do not publish an after-hours rate at all, which is not the same as not having one — ask before you sign.
Who answers an Australian after-hours service overnight?
It depends on the provider and it is worth asking directly. Virtual HQ’s FAQs state that its 24/7 calls are answered in London and the USA on a follow-the-sun basis, with the Australian team covering the daytime. Oracle CMS states that all of its call centres are based in Australia. Your Phones Covered puts an Australian team on its Premium and Essential tiers and an offshore team on Value. Several providers do not state it anywhere.
Is an after-hours answering service worth it for a small business?
It depends entirely on what an unanswered overnight call is worth. For an emergency trade, a clinic or a property manager, one captured job usually covers a month of the service. For a business whose overnight calls are almost always non-urgent, voicemail plus a morning callback costs nothing and loses very little.
Can I use an answering service only after hours?
Yes. Divert your line on a schedule and the service only sees the calls that arrive outside your hours. Be aware that this concentrates your entire volume into the surcharged window on any plan that has one, which is why the plan fee is a poor guide to the invoice for an after-hours-only line.
What happens on public holidays?
Treat public holidays as a separate question from nights and weekends. Virtual HQ’s surcharge clause names Australian national public holidays explicitly. Oracle CMS states that it operates all year round, including Christmas. If your busiest emergency days are public holidays, confirm both cover and rate for those days specifically.
